Local News: Madness: Matatu detained after crashing into police car
Police have detained a matatu christened
During the incident that occurred on 9 September just a stone’s throw away from Central Police Station, the matatu is seen reversing with a crowd of youths dangerously dangling onto its exterior before ramming into the back of the police vehicle.
As soon as the crash happens, the youths are seen scampering from the matatu as visibly shaken police officers alight from their wrecked vehicle.
Police are searching for the driver of the matatu that plies the Kahawa route.
According to Nairobi police head of traffic Joshua Omukata, an investigation into the matter has been launched and all police are looking for other matatus involved in the incident.
Road trip madness
An investigation by SDE revealed that the nganya (souped up matatu) was in a group of other hired matatus enroute to Meru for a road trip.
As per their norm, the matatus met along Moi Avenue kuchachisha (hype) the trip with the drivers brazenly driving the vehicles as youth hang dangerously from the moving matatus in disregard to traffic laws.
Attempts by police to disperse the rowdy crowd were futile till after the crash, when police used teargas to scatter the youths.
Speaking to SDE the founder of Matwana Matatu Culture Brian Wanyama AKA Graff Matwana criticized the incident, decrying the level of recklessness displayed.
“I feel pain having worked for 8 years create a good name for the matatu industry. Inachomea mathree zote ziko job (it paints a bad picture of all operating matatus).
“The organizers of the road trip should take responsibility for the incident. The crew of the matatu is also to be blamed.”
Wanyama called upon those in the matatu industry to set good examples, “I have organized road trips where the participants act responsibly. Through setting good examples, we can change the negative perception attributed to matatus.”
