A loved-up couple are set to wed after a phone number mix-up brought them together.

Jade Scott, 30, was baffled when she started receiving random messages from people she didn’t know.

Then one of her pals noticed that a mystery man’s face was showing as her WhatsApp profile picture under the username ‘Matt’.

The mum-of-one, who had recently changed phone numbers, realised someone was using her old digits.

So to clear up any confusion, Jade sent a message to her old number and started chatting to its new owner – 32-year-old Matthew Perren.

Within five days, the pair had met for coffee – and it was love at first sight.

Jade said: “It is fate that I switched my number and he went into a shop and got a new one a week later. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have even met.

“I didn’t believe in fate before but after this, how could I not? It feels like we have been put in each other’s lives for a reason.”

The couple’s unusual love story began in May 2018 when Jade received a flurry of Snapchat messages meant for bus shunter Matthew.

They came through to her, however, because her old number was still registered on the app.

After Jade decided to get in touch to explain the mix-up, the pair began chatting and quickly realised they had a lot in common.

Jade, of Maidstone, Kent, said: “We exchanged where we lived and what we did for work.

“From then on, we WhatsApped each other hundreds of times a day. It was from the second we woke up to when we went to bed at night.

“We chatted about how we both loved the moon, music, films and our hobbies. We spoke about everything.”

They were getting on so well that just five days later, the pair decided to meet at Costa Coffee in Chingford, north London, near where Jade was living at the time.

Matthew said: “After all these weird messages getting crossed over I was very intrigued to get to know Jade more.

“It was her sense of humour that grabbed my attention, so I asked her to meet me for a coffee so I could see if she could keep up with my banter in person.

“When she walked in, I had to do my best not to laugh as she did this silly wave, then we sat down and she spilled her drink.

“The next thing I knew, we had been speaking for five hours.”

Jade said her mum was “dubious” about the meet-up because she had met Matthew in such unusual circumstances, but it all turned out for the best.

She said: “Ever since, little things have happened – little signs that make us know we are soulmates.

“Michael Buble’s Everything is both of our favourite songs and everywhere we go, it is always playing. It’s like the universe is telling us we are on the right path. Everything is pushing us in the direction of each other.”

On Christmas Day, Matthew got down on one knee to pop the question in front of Jade’s family.

The couple plan to get married in 2022.

Matthew – who picked out Jade’s engagement ring with the help of her nine-year-old daughter, Elise – added: “Little did I know that changing my number would bring me my own little family.”
