Kenya Sevens narrowly lost 17-12 to champions South Africa in their opening match of the Dubai Sevens at the The Sevens Stadium.

Shujaa recovered from a poor start to lead 12-7 at the breather, but South Africa retuned stronger in the second half to edge the contest.

Ryan Oosthuizen fired Blitzboks 5-0 up, but Shujaa hit back through tries from Alvin Otieno and Vincent Onyala to lead 12-5 at the interval.

Boks restored parity through Rosko Specman in the second half, before speedster Seabelo Senatla weaved his way past the Kenyan defence to make it 17-12 up after Chris Dry had been held up but from resulting scrum to set Senatla up on the right wing.

In the other pool match, England beat Spain 36-7.
