Fort Ternan crash: Football fraternity mourns Thika United defender

The Kenyan football fraternity is mourning the death of former Kenyan Premier League side Thika United defender Dennis Lewa Mwangala in a tragic road accident at Fort Ternan in Kericho on Wednesday morning.
The player was reportedly on his way to Kakamega to complete a transfer to Kakamega Homeboyz when the bus he was travelling in was involved in a grisly road accident where 58 lives were lost.
“Evans Mwangala who is Lewa’s brother confirmed to Thika United FC that indeed Denis passed on in the ill-fated bus that crashed in Fort Ternan,” a statement from Thika United portal confirmed on Thursday.
“We as Thika United FC family wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Denis Lewa, for the tragic loss of their loved one; and may God’s peace and love comfort you now and always.”
Lewa joined Thika in January 2017 from National Super League (NSL) side Coast Stima after impressing in trials, the team then under the tutelage of coach James Nandwa.
He had just finished his second season with the relegated side before requesting to be released on mutual consent so as to join the Kakamega-based outfit.
His former teammate at Thika, Saad Musa said: “He was a kind guy, very humble and someone who was there for everyone and a good leader."
Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama tweeted: “My heartfelt condolences goes out to family, friends and fans of @ThikaUnitedFC for the loss of their captain Dennis Lewa. God Rest your soul in Peace Brother, and to your family may the lord give you comfort during this hard time.”
"It is with deep sadness that we learn of the demise of Thika United player Dennis Lewa who passed on in the tragic accident at Fort Ternan on Wednesday. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and Thika United during this time," the Kenyan Premier League tweeted on Thursday.
"Football Kenya Federation wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the family of former Thika United defender Dennis Lewa who passed on in a road accident that claimed more than 50 lives, in Kericho."
"Our thoughts and prayers are not only with the family of Dennis but also with those of the other victims, whose vibrant lives were cut short.May you all find solace during these trying times," added FKF.
Kenyan international defender Erick “Marcelo” Ouma also said: ""My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and relatives of Thika United player Dennis Lewa. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord.”
